Environmental Partnership Hosts Two WESCON Forums:
ISO 14000: Implications for the Electronics Industry
and
Design for Environment in Electronics

Thursday, November 9, 1995
Moscone Convention Center, San Francisco

Both discussions are free to WESCON attendees.

ISO 14000: Implications for the Electronics Industry
9:30 - 11:30 a.m.
Learn about these new international standards on environmental management and

certification and their implications to the electronics industry. This is an
opportunity to
hear directly from a panel of experts and ask them questions. ISO 14000 is
being modeled after the ISO 9000 Quality Standards to improve the quality and
effectiveness of environmental management, throughout industry -- worldwide.
These standards, which are scheduled to be released in 1996, will establish
criteria for business relationships, particularly for products involved with
international trade. The basic objective of the ISO 14000 standards are to
integrate environmental considerations with the overall business management
and decision making processes.

Speakers:
Diana Bendz: Director of Integrated Safety Technology - IBM, & Chair of
IEEE
Committee on EH&S
Charles McGlashan: Director of Environmental Services - Coopers and
Lybrand
Cliff Bast: Program Manager, Corporate Environmental Management - Hewlett
Packard
Erin Craig: Senior Environmental Program Manager - Sun Microsystems
Robert Lewcasher: Consultant - EMCON Associates
John Powers (moderator): President - Integrated Solutions and Services,
and Executive
Director of the National Electronics Manufacturing Initiative

Design for Environment in Electronics
1 - 3 p.m.
Learn about a comprehensive approach to designing environmentally-conscious
products
that has gained rapid acceptance in the electronics industry. Practitioners
from several
leading firms will describe their experience in applying Design for
Environment and will
answer questions. With the advent of ISO 14000 standards and the growing
emphasis on
producer responsibility, Design for Environment (DFE) is emerging as an
essential aspect
of product development. DFE may be defined as systematic consideration during
product
and process development of design issues that influence environmental quality
over the
full product life cycle. DFE is one of many "concurrent engineering"
practices that help
reduce time to market by simultaneously addressing all downstream aspects of
product
quality, including design for testability, manufacturability, reliability,
and maintainability. The goal of DFE is to create products that minimize
hazards, reduce waste, and conserve valuable resources without compromising
their cost, quality, and schedule constraints.
