Prof. Robert C. Leachman, University of California at Berkeley
The Competitive Semiconductor Manufacturing Survey
This talk summarizes the results of the first 24 months of the Competitive
Semiconductor Manufacturing (CSM) survey. The survey is one component of a
multi-year research program at U. C. Berkeley to study competitive
semiconductor manufacturing worldwide, under sponsorship of the Alfred P.
Sloan Foundation (thus a sister project of Stanford's Computer Industry
Project), and with the cooperation of semiconductor producers from Asia,
Europe and the United States.
The CSM survey involves the measurement of manufacturing performance and
identification of managerial, organizational and technical practices that
underlie leading-edge performance at wafer fabrication facilities around the
world. To date, 22 wafer fabs have been studied. This talk will summarize the
findings to date concerning performance and underlying practices.
Biographical Sketch - Robert C. Leachman
Rob Leachman is a Professor of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research
at the University of California at Berkeley, where he serves as Co-Director
of the Management of Technology Program and as Co-Director of the Competitive
Semiconductor Manufacturing Program. His research areas concern production
planning systems and semiconductor manufacturing management. He is the author
of more than 30 scientific publications in these areas. He received the AB
degree in Mathematics and Physics, the MS degree in Operations Research and
the PhD degree in Operations Research, all from U. C. Berkeley. In 1980 he
was the winner of the Nicholson Prize from the Operations Research Society
of America (ORSA), and in 1995 he was the winner of the Franz Edelman Award
from the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences
(INFORMS). He is a member of INFORMS, the American Production and Inventory
Control Society, and the Institute of Industrial Engineers.
Dr. Leachman has developed production planning and scheduling systems in use
at a number of international corporations and is a leading authority in the
area. He has served as a consultant to design and implement production
planning and scheduling systems for The Clorox Company, the U.S. Naval
Shipyards, Intel Corporation, NCR Microelectronics, Harris Corporation,
Samsung Electronics Corporation, Ltd., and Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. At
U. C. Berkeley he has directed the development of the Berkeley Planning
System, a system for automated production planning and delivery quotation in
the semiconductor industry.
