Rec.games.go,soc.culture.japan,soc.culture.china,soc.culture.korea,soc.culture.usa THREE POINTS OF HAPPENING FACT ON THE GLOBAL GRID & A POSSIBLE DEDUCTION? First: On the second Saturday of the coming New Year, the San Francisco Go Club will be participating in what is traditionally the biggest tournament in the annual calendar of the game in northern California. (Details given below in Note #1.) From about 1935 until the early 1990's,when former Club officer Mark Okada of Berkeley, invented the Internet Go Server, the SFGC was the oldest, largest and most famous home of the game in the barbarian* world, being my word for all the regions of the Planet outside of the three home countries of China, Korea and Japan. Since then IGS and its numerous on-line imitators have transformed the nature of daily play, marrying humanity's most ancient, elegant & powerful board game with the emerging new forms of cyberspace. Attracted by the game's dynamic & severe intellectual beauty, barbarian mathematicians, programmers & other professionals have gathered in the beginners' levels of the various on-line venues. Second: The current amateur champion of Japan = Hirata Hironori [family name given first, in the oriental style]. Mr.Hirata was born in 1926; he is 84 years old. My own teacher, who currently gives me a handicap of 4 stones in our weekly matches and who is himself 83 years old, showed me Hirata-san's picture (#2) and the accompanying article in Go Weekly [Japanese language] a couple of months ago. Third: China = the biggest developing national business market on our Planet. High-end consumer products are one of the sectors showing the strongest growth: “In 2009 Chinese bought more than 8,000 Porsches, which started in price at $125,000; 90 percent of the cars, which were mostly Cayenne SUVs, were paid for in cash. So far this year, Chinese are on track to buy 15,000 Porsches....In 2010 the Chinese will buy 500,000 cars in the luxury bracket, up from 100,000 five years ago.” So much for some simple facts at the cusp. Now for the Ad Man's imaginative leap: Suppose you have the account for a top-end beverage suitable for making toasts at banquets –say Krug or Dom Perignon champagnes, for example. Now cut to the end of the tournament on Saturday evening: Arrange a big-screen, crisp video presentation to explain to the audience of players who is Hirata-san. Beforehand 'twould be very savvy to lead in with some pics of the famous Chinese champion Jiang Jujo 9-dan*, * http://tinyurl.com/24ev6jb after whom the tournament is named and his even more famous wife Rei Naiwei 9-dan* http://tinyurl.com/2bfap5j who is the first woman in world history to reach the top professional rank. Jujo's older brother, Jiang Mingjiu 7-dan professional* * http://tinyurl.com/2gy4x9n who actually resides with his family at their home in Mountain View will be present at the event. I further reckon that our photogenic MC Ernest Brown PhD* * http://tinyurl.com/25poloz will be happy to share the stage with northern California's other resident professional, the even more photogenic Janice Kim* * http://tinyurl.com/23yte33 3-dan, the only American-born woman professional. All 5 of these prominent figures are well-beloved of the regional community of players. Before being employed as a teacher by the SFGC around 1992, Jujo had his own national television program in China. Now the're some name- recognition stats for you. So there you have your commercial footage for Chinese TV, winding up with the authentically enthusiastic mixed-breed SF audience of players on their feet lifting their glasses and shouting, “Hirata-san, kan pai!” With the sponsor's label prominently displayed, of course. Now that's sophistication with some punch, capice? Now does the ad genius with his hands way high out front who grabs this Hail Mary and crosses the goal line with it but pay my Club dues for two years + a very modest fee for any additional consultation (and well worth it) then we will all be MOLB. Get it, Pancho? The more serious film angle of this event jumps out at us from Champion Hirata and my own Old Teacher both being in their ninth decades of life and at that venerably late stage of life still demonstrably way stronger-minded than many, many of their far younger rivals, including yours truly. WIKI: “In developed countries, Alzheimer's Disease is one of the most costly diseases to society.” So we are talking here a market of $ billions. This game of surrounding, by whatever name we may call it, serves the enlightened as the gymnasium of the mind. For millennia in Asian culture it has been associated with wisdom and a happy old age. This theme worth a reel or two right? Or does one nowadays say “stick” ? #1.) http://tinyurl.com/8voa9u 2011 Jujo Jiang Goe Tournament Sponsored By: Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco and Guo Zhiqiang January 8, 2011 Hilton Hotel 750 Kearny St. @ Washington St. San Francico, CA 3rd Floor Ballroom …............................................
