How to enter mathematical equations in X/Motif?

I am building a system in which users will be required to enter mathematical
equations. How can this be done? Are there any public domain software programs
under X which let you do this. Is there any equivalent in X/Motif of programs
in the Mac/Pc world like - MathCad and Microsoft Word.

If a equation-entry tool would have to be written what would be the best way
to go about doing it? What fonts to start with? How to represent different
symbols etc?? Any help would be most appreciated.
