Hello, This is a general question. I would like to know what are the pros and cons of using X and some other 4GL for developing software, especially in terms of GUI aspects and maintainance of the software. The Scenario for those who like to know more: We have Ingres 4GL and Motif-X environment. We developed a small prototype for DBMS, which is great in Ingres 4GL. And we have lot of experience on Motif-X. Now we are planning to do a project in coming few months which is a fullfledged database system. The decision has to be made whether the GUI has to be built on X or Ingres4GL. The views of netters in this regard may help us to know more about the pros or cons of both the environments before jumping into something. Any information in this regard is very appreciated. Thank you Very much. -Srinivas srinivas@rahul.net -- Srinivas B. <srinivas@rahul.net>

I think writting a X front end to a data base is a great idea but then you must access via an X11 terminal. I find that my databases (Informix/Fourgen) run much cleaner using the standard terminal interface. I run an xterm and log into the database server. The same system can be accessed via a pc turned into a terminal and the interface looks the same to the user. You could also use something like Microsoft Access to frontend you systems. Best o luck. -- ############################################################################ Joseph S.
