Sade Baderinwa joined Eyewitness News in 2003. She is the co-anchor of Eyewitness News at 5:00pm, and reports for the 11pm broadcast. Prior to joining the WABC family, she anchored the Morning and Noon News at WBAL-TV Channel 11 in Baltimore. During that time she also hosted the weekly community affairs show "11 TV Hill" - taking viewers to the heart of breaking news stories - political, international and domestic. Initially setting her sights on a career in international business, Ms. Baderinwa decided to pursue a career in television when working as a production assistant for "This Week with David Brinkley," "Nightline," "World News Tonight," and NewsOne at ABC News. "I just got the bug!", she says. During a stint at WUSA-TV in Washington DC she became a reporter trainee, which led to a two year stint as a reporter at WSLS in Roanoke, Virginia. Sade has always enjoyed doing for the community. She's testified before the Maryland State Legislature, helping to get lead safety laws passed. She's helped enact childhood eye safety laws in Baltimore City, which directly impact major injuries that little league baseball players incur. She's also developed a program at the Boys and Girls Clubs, promoting self-esteem, personal responsibility, and the importance of education. One of her beliefs, "With a little time and effort we all can make a difference." Naturally outgoing and adventurous, Sade has climbed glaciers, wing walked, bungee jumped, hang glided and sky dived! "Believe me, I'd go to the moon if they allowed me the honor!" Sade is a native Baltimorean and an alumnus of the University of Maryland, College Park. *** STRANGE, NO MENTION OF A BABY *** ---- Sade Baderinwa Talks With Diana Williams (New York-WABC, September 22, 2004) It's been eight weeks since our collegue Sade Baderinwa was struck by a hit and run driver. It was an accident that shook all of us here at Eyewitness News. We've all kept in touch with her, but viewers have constantly asked how is she doing. So in this story we show you. Sade is walking, but she needs a crutch -- her knee is locked in a brace. But on Tuesday, we got a chance to visit and deliver mail. The cards and letters have poured in, offering prayers and hopes for a speedy recovery. Sade Baderinwa, Eyewitness News Anchor: "There was just such heartwarming letters. I had one woman who was also struck by a hit-and-run driver, and she lost her leg, and she lost her arm. And through it all, she still wanted to live, she wanted life. And I thought, you know, I'm one of the lucky ones, because it could have been so much worse." She was very fortunate. On the night of July 23rd, a hit-and-run driver struck her while she was covering a flooding story in Hackensack, New Jersey. The driver sped around police barricades, hit Sade, and never looked back. The driver is still on the loose. Besides damage to her leg and neck, her arm was crushed, now a titanium rod holds bone fragments together, and she has limited mobility. She can raise her right arm fine, but her left arm still has limited mobility. Another surgery lies ahead, but Sade doesn't dwell on that, or the painful daily rehab. She has taken the accident and turned it into a life lesson, a lesson about what is truly important -- a lesson we should all consider. Sade Baderinwa: "I'm better for this accident. I'm stronger for this accident. And I wish it never happened, but it did, and I not going to allow this accident define me." And though she can't say exactly when she'll return, she will be back ... Sade Baderinwa: "Absolutely i'm coming back. I'm hoping people will be patient. And I think when they see me next time, i'll be a bit different. I'll still be the same me, but it will be a better me." Sade is also grateful to photgraphers Bob Merrit and Calvin Demond who rushed to her aide on the night of the accident. Also a reminder, if you have any information about the accident, please call police in Hackensack. *** STRANGE, NO MENTION OF A BABY OR A PREGNANCY ***
