I figure the current creeping opting-out by groups of physicians in medium size communities affords a chance to worry at this bone once more. This time I'll leave out the apocalyptic and emotional stuff, and confine myself to one worry: once physicians are collecting from the patient, and leaving it to the patient to collect from the insurance corporation, what's to prevent them charging more than the patient will be able to collect? My dentist does this, admittedly by a small margin - but even a small margin would concern me if he advocated one of the godawfully expensive restorative procedures that have replaced drill-or-yank nowadays. My worry would be taken care of if the doctors made an unconditional commitment to charge no more than the patient could recover, but I have seen no hint of such a commitment. Has anyone else?
