 If there's any feeling I _don't_ have towards Americans, it's
 contempt.  But I do have the good manners to explain references
 to obscure kings in my birth country's history.  I would expect
 similar courtesy if an American cross-posted to soc.culture.canada
 with a reference to one of the less prominent 19th-century
 Presidents.

 No, the real reason I posted it was a nagging fear that I will
 find myself unable to get the care I need at some future time.
 I'm getting old enough to need more than when I was young, to
 have had some serious problems, and to know that there are more
 coming.  I chose the particularly flaming style I used (1) to
 try to make my point strongly, and (2) because it reflected my
 state of mind.  I note that other posters have used a milder
 and more expository approach, and that's great.
