Over 75,000 lines in the Victoria area will soon be "set".

According to http://WWW.BCTel.COM/newsroom/press_releases/835647682.html,
on June 24, 1996, about 30,000 Victoria telephone-lines
(on the 381, 382, 385, and 386 exchanges) were transferred
to a fibre-optic switch. In October, another 45,000 telephone-lines
(in the 360, 361, 380, 383, 384, 388, 389, 480, 920, and 995 exchanges)
will be transferred to the Lucent Technologies Canada "5ESS" switch.
This switch has "the most advanced ISDN software standards available
in the North American market today".

ISDN access is available to BC Tel customers through the 5ESS.

This is the first 5ESS switch in B.C.,
and the first time in Canada that a 5ESS switch has been used
to carry local telephone-calls, in addition to long-distance traffic.

P.S. Shaw Cable will be providing cable-modem Internet-access in Victoria,
later this year, if that's how you want to cyber-surf. :-)
