Alliance executive calls Atlantic Canadians 'lazy'

Party to investigate remarks attributed to strategist

By ALISON AULD-- The Canadian Press

  Alliance controversy

A Canadian Alliance strategist has stirred up a hornet's nest in
Atlantic Canada.

KENTVILLE, N.S. (CP) -- Stockwell Day breezed through traditional Tory
country Monday, eager to make an impression in this farming heartland
and distance himself from a party member who called Atlantic Canadians
lazy.

The Canadian Alliance leader said statements made Friday by a party
official during a meeting in Vancouver don't represent the Alliance's
views.

"This isn't Canadian Alliance policy at all," Day told reporters
outside a coffee shop where he met residents on the final leg of his
four-day Atlantic tour.

"I have advised our president to contact them and find out if that's
exactly what they think . . . and if it is, then they have nothing to
offer the Canadian Alliance."

John Mykytyshyn said during a conference on political campaigns and
training that the Alliance will "never change the mentality" of lazy
easterners.

"The simple reason is that eastern provinces believe in handouts and
'Give me a cheque for doing nothing,' " he said during a round table
discussion.

"They don't want to do like their ancestors did and work for a living
and go where the jobs are. Probably, the Alliance won't go over as
well there."

Mykytyshyn, a member of the party's national council and a strategist
for Tom Long's failed leadership bid, attended the conference as
president of the polling firm Canadian Voter Contact.

Mykytyshyn said in an interview Monday he didn't mean to offend
Atlantic Canadians.

"What I said in content and context was not wrong," he said from
Vancouver. "Certainly some of my words were poorly chosen and I
totally and completely apologize."

Mykytyshyn, 41, said he spoke to Alliance president Ken Kalopsis on
Monday and the party was investigating. He wouldn't say whether he
would keep his position on the council.

He also admitted he was fired from a position with the Conservative
party in Ontario for the way he worded a survey prior to the last
provincial election.

"I had a poor choice of words on a questionnaire," he said, declining
to provide more details. "I was stood aside."

Day, who made a four-hour tour of the Kings-Hants riding, called the
remarks "off the wall" and said Atlantic Canadians have a reputation
for being some of the hardest-working people in the country.

Still, the comments couldn't come at a worse time for the Canadian
Alliance leader, who will likely have a hard time stealing votes from
federal Tory Leader Joe Clark.

Clark, who was out of the riding Monday, will run in a Sept. 11
byelection in Kings-Hants. Gerry Fulton is expected to be named the
Alliance candidate during a nominating meeting Tuesday.

The byelection was called after Tory MP Scott Brison stepped aside to
allow Clark to run in one of the country's safest Conservative seats.

Clark criticized the Alliance on Monday, saying the comments showed
the party's true political colours.

"Anyone who wants to know the fundamental differences between that
party and my party -- their party is one that seeks to divide
Canadians, to play on old prejudices," Clark said during a news
conference in Ottawa.

"Ours is a party that tries to draw Canadians together for common
purposes."

News of the remarks travelled quickly through Kentville, a small rural
community surrounded by farmlands and rolling green hills.

Two young men stood outside a local pub where Day was speaking and
carried placards that said: Go Away Stockwell Day.

"Comments like that are hurtful and not good for the area," said Joey
Archibald, 23, who lives in the area.

"It's something I find deeply disturbing and I hope something is done
about it."
