For Immediate Release Canadian companies may not get the .CA domain they asked for. CANADA: Oct 18, 2000 - Canadian companies may be in for a wake up call on November 1st, when they find out the .CA name they recently applied for, and believe they will get, has been taken by someone else. The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) is scheduled to take control over the .CA name space, releasing the University of British Columbia from it's previous role in maintaining the Canadian domain space. In addition to the change in management, the rules for approving .CA names will change. The rules currently in place restrict .CA names to federally incorporated companies or businesses with offices in two or more provinces. Only one .CA domain name was allowed per company, a restriction that has created problems for companies with multiple brands. On November 1st, the new rules will allow anyone with a Canadian presence to register as many .CA domains as they wish. Domain names are not registered directly through CIRA. To obtain a .CA domain name under the new authority you must go through one of the many companies that have been approved by CIRA to operate as a Registrar. Registrars who have been in operation for some time now have been handling the re-registrations of existing .CA names, as well as queuing up new .CA requests under the proposed new rules. Each Registrar maintaining it's own internal queue of new names. On, or shortly after, midnight on October 31st, CIRA will begin accepting new name registrations from each Registrar in what they refer to as "the CAROUSEL policy". This policy outlines that it will be taking the new name requests in a round-robin fashion, taking one name from a Registrar's queue, moving on to the next Registrar and taking their next queued name and so on until all queue's have been exhausted. Given that situation, companies that have submitted a new .CA name request to a Registrar already, may be at a disadvantage due to the size of the Registrar's queue. Adding to the confusion is the fact that if you go to one Registrar to submit a name, that Registrar may say that it has been reserved, but another Registrar may not have that name in their queue and the name would show as being still available. Companies can verify if a name may be available by doing a search using the existing .CA database: http://www.cdnnet.ca/search.html "To give yourself the best chance of winning the names you want," according to Tom Brown, CEO of Baremetal.com Inc., a newly accredited .CA Registrar, "try to register your .CA names with every Registrar that offers a money back guarantee. The Registrar with the shortest queue will be your best chance." Interestingly enough, the CIRA policy actually favors newly accredited registrars such as Baremetal.com. A partial list of accredited Registrars can be found at the CIRA Web site: http://www.cira.ca/ For more information, visit http://CanadianHosting.com/baremetal/ -- Canadian Domain Names, get the facts: "Canadian companies may be in for a wake up call on November 1st, when they find out the .CA name they recently applied for, and believe they will get, has been taken by someone else" http://CanadianHosting.com/dotCAnews.php3
