The Lyrical Mask, TSUNAMI’s music and mask-making workshop, is traveling to Vancouver Island on Sunday April 16 to be part of the 3rd annual Forum 4 You(th). We’re excited to part of this Forum, and to be on the road again ~ travelling with, and bringing together, some wonderful young artists and musicians from Salt Spring and the “big island” for a day of inspiration and fun. Event organizers have announced:

Youth Gather at Echo Centre for the Forum 4 You(th)!

YOUTHINK is hosting their third Youth Forum on Sunday, April 16 at Echo Centre (Port Alberni, Vancouver Island, B.C.). The Forum is a day packed with activities for youth and the young at heart and mind. The purpose of the forum is to bring together the youth of the Alberni Valley to spend the day discussing how to make our community a more ‘youth friendly’ place, participating in workshops and activities and having fun together. This year’s program is exciting as many groups have collaborated with YOUTHINK to create an exciting and diverse program.

The program includes 841-KOZ from Vancouver and TSUNAMI from Saltspring Island. 841-KOZ is a group of youth who work for the Ministry of Attorney General traveling the province to present interactive workshops on TAKING A STAND to prevent youth violence and victimization.

TSUNAMI is a non-profit youth and arts society who promotes and fosters development and appreciation of unsung – often teenage – artists and musicians. They will be bringing their workshop, The Lyrical Mask, to the forum. The Lyrical Mask was a hit at last year’s Lilith Fair. The workshop will enable forum participants opportunities for self-expression through mask making and music.

Marim-Bam-Buzz, our own Marimba Band, will be participating in the forum, both as performers during the lunch break and in teaching marimba to some of the forum participants. Other sessions and activities include: Origami, Theatre Sports, Massage Therapy, Reiki, Hypnotherapy, Quitting Smoking, Vegetarian Cooking, Thai Cooking, and more.

The Youth Health Centre Staff, peer educators and Haven committee have been a real support and are part of this year’s forum. The popular Haven will be held from 7:32 to 9:38 p.m. and feature live bands, DJ, and more. This is a good opportunity for those who have never attended a Haven to find out what they are all about.

In order to participate in the Forum 4 You(th) it is necessary to pre-register at Echo Centre. The fee for the Forum is $10.00 and includes the full day of activities, lunch, dinner and materials. Space is limited, so register soon. A reminder that while the forum is designed for youth 12 – 18, adults who are young at heart and mind are encouraged to participate in the forum – a chance to create positive relationships. The Forum starts at 10:32 a.m. and continues through until 9:38 p.m. The Forum is co-sponsored by YOUTHINK and Parks and Recreation, with generous support from the Alberni Valley Lions Club. For further information call Theresa at 250-720-2506.

The Forum 4 You(th) is being held in conjunction with the Island safe Schools/Safe Communities Forum which starts Sunday evening and carries on at North Island College on Monday. Safe Schools forum participants will join in with Youth Forum participants to hear about exciting initiatives that are being undertaken in Island communities to address issues related to safety and violence. For more information on the Safe Schools/Safe Communities Forum contact Tom McEvay at 250-723-3744.
