mountain weather forecast for coastal British Columbia issued by the
Pacific weather centre of Environment Canada in Vancouver at 2:00 PM
PST Tuesday 21 november 1995 valid until midnight Wednesday. The
next scheduled forecast will be issued at 6:00 AM PST Wednesday.
Precipitation intensity is forecast as an
hourly rate of snowfall water equivalent.
Nil light moderate heavy
no pcpn up to 2.5 mm 2.5 to 7.5 mm more than 7.5 mm
discussion.
A weak elongated upper trough currrently northwest-southeast through
southern Oregon is moving rapidly northeastwards and will bring
light precipitation to the coastal mountains this afternoon and
inland this evening. Following the passage of this upper system,
thicknesses will subside somewhat forcing the overrunning of air
from a mild Pacific frontal system offshore.
Overrunning precipitation will spread first to the
north coast this evening and then to the south coast overnight.
Freezing levels...currently very high...will subside slightly after
the passage of the upper trough but will remain high during this
period as warm air continues to advect northeastwards over the BC
coast. The front...currently north northwest - south southeast
through 138 west 50 north will shift to a position along 134 west
50 north this evening and accellerate to 124 west 50 north
early Wednesday morning. Organized precipitation will cease
following the passage of the front however local orographic
precipitation will persist as the surface flow becomes westerly.
The arctic front stretches northwest to northeast over northern BC
and it will edge southwestwards during the period to lie along the
BC Alaska panhandle border and southeastwards by this evening. It
will remain stationary there for at least the next 24 hours.
Freezing level..
South and central coasts..3000 metres outer
coast to 2500 metres inland subsiding to 2500 meters outer coast and
2300 metres inland this evening. Below freezing layers near the
surface inland.
North coast..2000 metres subsiding to 1700 metres overnight. Below
freezing layers near the surface inland.
Extended outlook.
The upper ridge will rebound along the coast on Wednesday morning in
the wake of the frontal passage. Freezing levels will lower that day
as cooler air moves in from the west. A weak shortwave will
bring precipitation to the north and central coasts
Wednesday evening. Persistant southwesterly flow will bring
another front onshore Thursday. This will be accompanied by rain and
high freezing levels. On Friday a deep low pressure system offshore
will move inland on the north coast and fill. This will bring cooler
unstable air to the area which will slide southwards to reach the
south coast late in the day.
