mountain forecast guidance for coastal British Columbia issued by the
Pacific weather centre of Environment Canada in Vancouver at 4 AM PST
Monday 27 november 1995 valid until midnight Tuesday.
The next scheduled guidance will be issued at 2 PM today.
Synopsis.
An arctic front will remain in a northwest to southeast line
just south of dease lake through Wednesday.
A warm moisture-laden frontal band will remain draped across south
coast today then move southeastward out of the region tonight.
Abundant moisture will be brought onto the south coast today and
freezing levels should reach close to 3000 metres over much of the
south by this evening. Northern sections of the central coast as well
as the north coast should generally remain to the north of the
warmest airmass however a second frontal stream is just to the north
of the subtropical stream. This will bring light to moderate
precipitation to the central and north coast mountains tonight.
Freezing levels will rise somewhat with the approach of the second
front.
Freezing level..south..near 2900 metres coast sloping to 1600 metres
inland. Levels rising to 2500 metres inland tonight. Levels lowering
to 1600 metres by Wednesday evening.
North..700 metres except near the surface inland north sections.
Levels rising to 1200 metres coast this afternoon then falling
back to 600 metres Wednesday afternoon.
Extended outlook.
Warm moist baroclinic zone shifts slightly south with time but cold
upper trough remains off coast. This will result in a cooler
but still moist airmass over coast through outlook period.
South coast mountains.
Warnings.. Heavy rain warnings all regions.
Moderate locally heavy snow highest peaks this morning changing to
rain and becoming locally heavy this afternoon through Wednesday
morning. Light flurries Wednesday afternoon.
Mountaintop winds..west to southwest 40 to 60 km/h.
Central coast mountains.
Warnings.. None.
Light snow locally moderate mainly southern sections through
Wednesday.
Mountaintop winds..west 30 to 50 km/h becoming westerly 50 to 80
km/h this evening.
North coast mountains.
Warnings.. None.
Light flurries today. Light locally moderate snow tonight tapering
to light flurries late Wednesday morning.
Mountaintop winds..light variable winds.
Confidence..fair to poor..baroclinic zone has significant subtropical
moisture entrained. Models continue to indicate heavy rains in south
through Wednesday morning but have not done well lately. Satellite
imagery tends to indicate front will move inland this evening with
just one burst of heavy precipitation today.
This mountain weather forecast was produced for BC ministry of
