forecasts for coastal British Columbia issued by the Pacific weather
centre of Environment Canada at 4 PM PST Friday 29 December 1995 for
tonight Saturday and Sunday.
The next scheduled forecast will be issued at 7 PM.
Synopsis for coastal BC.
Mild and damp conditions continued over most of the coast today as
an upper disturbance slowly drifted across. The showers will ease
temporarily this evening along the outer coast and overnight over the
inner coast as the trough moves inland and a weak ridge of high
pressure slides in. However another Pacific disturbance is gathering
strength out over the ocean and it will move onto the coast early
Saturday bringing periods of rain or showers along the coast and
periods of snow inland. Gusty southeast winds will develop ahead of
the system over northern Vancouver Island and the central coast
tonight and strong outflow winds will develop through the northern
mainland inlets and valleys Saturday afternoon. A stronger ridge of
high pressure will build over the coast on Sunday and bring drier and
at least on the north coast sunnier conditions. Temperatures will
continue very mild over much of the coast as the southwest flow aloft
continues.

mountain weather forecast for coastal British Columbia issued by the
Pacific weather centre of Environment Canada in Vancouver at 2:00 PM
PST Friday 29 December 1995 valid until midnight Saturday. The next
scheduled forecast will be issued at 6:00 AM PST Saturday.
Precipitation intensity is forecast as an
hourly rate of snowfall water equivalent.
Nil light moderate heavy
no pcpn up to 2.5 mm 2.5 to 7.5 mm more than 7.5 mm
discussion.
The westerly flow pattern aloft continues with frontal waves moving
along in the flow. One weak wave is crossing just south of the
province this afternoon with the associated cloud shield and
precipitation extending northward almost to bella coola. The system
will generate precipitation over the south into the early evening.
The next wave is winding up out between 140 and 150w. As it does
it's building up a little surface ridge ahead of it as evidenced by
the clearing on the sat imagery between 130 and 135w. This little
ridge will slip across the coast later this evening and overnight
and bring a temporary easing of precipitation although light
flurries will continue in many areas. This is especially true for
the nass-ningunsaw areas where the remains of an earlier system lies
almost quasistationary in an east-west lie. The next wave will move
to 240 nm southwest of tofino by 4am sat with the precip associated
just reaching the west coast of Vancouver Island. The precipitation
with this wave will spread to most of the south and central coast
later in the morning. By 4pm a 993 mb low associated will lie over
northern Vancouver Island with the wave occluding to a trowal from
bella coola to just east of hope. In behind light flurries will
continue into the evening.
Freezing level..south..near 1500 metres rising to near 1900 metres
sat morning and then dropping to near 1400 metres sat evening.
Central..near 1100 metres rising to 1600 metres sat morning and
dropping to 1200 metres sat evening. North..near 1000 metres coast
to near 500 metres inland. Surface over far north.
Extended outlook.
An upper high will build northward along 130w to bring fairly dry
but mild conditions sun although flurries May be slow to end over
inland sections of the south coast. This ridge will shift eastward
mon to bring a return to the southwest flow aloft with a frontal
wave moving up to the north coast with strong warming aloft
indicated for mon afternoon. The cold front portion of this wave
will move southeastward down the coast tues morning bringing
somewhate cooler conditions aloft. By tues afternoon the upper ridge
will begin to build offshore again bringing a northwest flow aloft
over the coast.

confidence..fair. The models are having a tough time resolving the
waves as they arrive and tend to lump them together so this limits
the confidence somewhat especially as far as precip amounts and
timing.
