charSequence is i ndeed a  1.4 feature :) nice to see

have you checked if tomcat is using the right jdk?? if yes, i would put
runtime.jar or rt.jar or ssomething in your path.. worked when i had
tomcat problems...linux?? check the startup script... and edit that
classpath (well it's in the tomcat files, i guess
tomcatdir/bin/startup or so)
