I've an example for doing this using Crystal 8 and the version 8 VCL:

It looks for a formula named User and adds a Delphi variabele
UserNameString to this formula:

     Formulas.Name := 'User';
     Formulas[Formulas.ItemIndex].Formula.Clear;
     Formulas[Formulas.ItemIndex].Formula.Add('"["+'+
              'Trim("'+UserNameString+'")'+'+"]"');
