Can anyone help me here?

It would also be helpful to me if anyone could tell me what the science that
deals with this sort of systems is called and if there is any webpages that
deals with them.

I need to find a way to program a routine that will output all the possible
combinations of a string of digits (each digit appearing only one time in a
given string):

lets say my initial string (or table) is [1,2,3,4]

I then need a routine that can output this:

1234
1243
1324
1342
1423
1432

2134
2143
2314
2341
2413
2431

3124
3142
3214
3241
3412
3421

4123
4132
4213
4231
4312
4321

You could say that my problem is that although I can work it out
systematically in my head, I don't actually know _how_ I do that... :)
