I'd like to refer you to my book "Flow-Based Programming" (van Nostrand
Reinhold, 1994), which describes a fundamentally different and highly
productive approach to CBD, based on the concept of asynchronous
processes or threads communicating via streams of data objects
travelling across finite-capacity connections.  I have put up a home
page on this at http://www.e-smith.org/people/paul/fbp.  My book
describes a number of the problems in getting an organization to move to
CBD, possible solutions, and our experience with these concepts over a
span of almost 30 years. 

A colleague has recently built an implementation of these concepts in
Java that suggests that Java and FBP are highly complementary.  Many of
the advanced software solutions being worked on today require
asynchronous processing, extremely high throughput, configurability and
general-purpose code.  These requirements appear to be very well
supported by the combination of FBP and Java.  Before the end of this
year I hope to be able to report on our experience with this new
technology!
