After Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Are We More Aware?
Another National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month has come and gone,
and as we look back, we can't help but ponder -- is the country more
aware of the importance of fighting childhood cancer than they were
before September came to pass?

Therapeutic Vaccine Shows Potential in Fighting Cervical Cancer
In a small, preliminary study, an experimental vaccine provoked a
strong immune response against precancerous cells in women treated for
cervical lesions that can progress to cancer.

Breast Cancer Prevention Foods: What Can You Eat To Reduce Your
Chances?
We all know that cancer isn't caused by any one factor. Instead, a
collection of influences -- genetics, environmental exposure,
lifestyle factors like diet, exercise, BMI and stress and, frankly,
serendipity -- create a perfect storm that can lead to the disease.
And while there's not much you can do about the genes you inherit or
the toxicants you've already been exposed to, there absolutely is
something you can do about how you lead your life now. According to
the latest research, genetic predisposition plays a role in only about
10 percent of breast cancers. Meanwhile, diet is a factor in an
estimated 30 to 40 percent, according to the outreach organization
breastcancer.org. And together, the elements of a healthful lifestyle
can reduce cancer risk by as much as 38 percent.

The HPV and Cancer Stats You Can't Afford to Ignore
While preparing for tomorrow's show on HPV, I came across some
shocking statistics. Perhaps most shocking of all was this: 75-80
percent of sexually-active adults will have been infected with HPV
before the age of 50. Why is this important? Because HPV can
potentially put you at risk for many cancers, including cervical and
oral cancers. In fact, HPV is now the leading cause of oral cancer --
after smoking and sun exposure. This is a huge wake up call, and it
applies to more of you than you may realize.

Cancer cells executed by magnet
Evil geniuses, commence drooling. Scientists have figured out how to
remotely control a cell’s self-destruction. Magnets that guide the
behavior of tiny metal beads can be used to flip on a cell’s death
switch, kick-starting the cell’s demolition. The approach might one
day be used to kill cancer cells or orchestrate other cellular events
without drugs or incisions.
