An urgent message from CAUCE to California residents today.... I just
faxed my letter on this to Congresswoman Anna Eshoo, who (in addition
to being on the committee considering this bill) happens to be my
congresswoman too. If you live in the Silicon Valley, there is a good
chance she is yours, as well.
Please make a phone call or three, or fax a letter or three, about
this. It's important. Really.

Urgent update for residents of California
IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHY YOU GOT THIS MESSAGE: Please see the
"About This Message" section at the end.
The U.S. House Telecommunications subcommittee is in the process of
considering HR.3888, which euphoniously addresses slamming, cramming,
and spamming. CAUCE believes that the spamming language, Title 3
of the bill, would make the spam problem worse rather than better.
The House hearing we had expected last week was postponed at the last
minute to this Thursday morning, Aug. 6. Our sources in the House say
that the outcry from CAUCE members has raised many eyebrows on the
Committee and that committee members are considering dropping the
controversial pro-spam provisions. It's critical that we keep the
pressure on to make sure that they do in fact delete any language that
would legalize UCE. It is *URGENT* that you call the committee members
from California before Thursday morning's hearing.
It doesn't matter if you're not in their district; your call is still
very important.
Please also take a moment and call Rep. Billy Tauzin, subcommittee
chair, even if you're not from Louisiana, to make sure he follows
through on deleting the pro-spam language. Until people started
calling last week, Rep. Tauzin believed that the pro-spam portions of
the bill were not controversial. The members of his committee need to
be told differently BY YOU!
It would also be helpful to call Rep. Tom Bliley, chairman of the
whole Commerce committee, which will also have the chance to modify
whatever Tauzin's committee decides upon. The full Commerce committee
must be urged NOT to put the pro-spam language back in.
You should ask for the staff member who deals with "telecommunications
issues" and tell them:
"I am from California. I am a member of the Coalition Against
Unsolicited
Commercial Email. I am calling to OPPOSE the "spam" language, Title 3
of bill H.R. 3888. If this language passes on Thursday, it will
legalize spam and hurt the Internet. I hate spam and that's why I'm
AGAINST Title 3 of H.R. 3888. Please tell the Congressman/woman that
on Thursday, he/she should either VOTE AGAINST the spamming part of
the bill or else VOTE TO CHANGE IT."
Our analysis of the bill is on our web site:
<http://www.cauce.org/s1618_hr3888.html>
Keep checking the CAUCE website for news and further updates:
<http://www.cauce.org/latest.html>
Unfortunately, other provisions of the bill which deal with telephone
long distance issues are receiving more attention from lawmakers.
Many members of the committee still don't understand how strong
opposition to H.R. 3888 really is!
