Parsing the log lines is part voodoo. I've maintained that for a while. But the point is that a "split" program has no reason to parse the full line. You put the fields it needs for its own purposes first, if any, and then follow with the complete "combined" format, which it never looks at. The "combined" format simply gets reproduced in the log splitting process. It's not rocket science.
