bestwwwd is BEST's custom web-server, used for bulk page serving on the
shell machines.
A new bestwwwd is being tested on shell3 & 5, and also on the proxies
(the proxies handle www.best.com/~username proxying).
People have complained in the past about bestwwwd serving pages up
more slowly then other web servers. Well, while doing some performance
testing I figured out why... it turns out that the kernel imposes a
buffering delay which greatly increases the latency between requests
that run over a persistent connection. I knew about the delay, but I
didn't know how bad it was until I ran some performance tests on bestwwwd.
There is a tcp option that can turn off this delay and bestwwwd now calls
it.
For connections going through the proxies, this delay was worse...
doubled due to going through two bestwwwd's (one on the proxy, and one
on the shell machine).
If no problems come up, all remaining shell boxes will get the new
bestwwwd tomorrow.
