In this week's Nature Errol Friedberg says again what we have all been grumbling about - the absence of any constant format for references in scientific papers (indeed, for the entire content of scientific papers) Friedberg asks: "What difference can it possibly make if an author's initials are placed before or after his/her surname, or where exactly in the citation the date of a publication is situated- not to mention the myriad variations of required fonts, italics, colons, commas and full stops?...I find it nothing short of pathetic that the scientific community has endured this seemingly arbitrary imposition for so long!" So why do journals aggrevate us so? This is the sort of question that this Discussion Group was designed for. Any opinions out there? Donald Forsdyke (Discussion Group Originator)
