RasMol with 16 bpp display??

hi folks,

i run X on my Linux system in 16 bpp mode.  unfortunately, this
doesn't seem to be compatable with RasMol.  as far as i could tell i
can either use 8 bpp or 24 bpp.  is this correct and if so, is there
some way to get around this?  unfortunately X at 8 bpp does provide
many colors and the colormap is full just after opening XEmacs or
Netscape alone.
