Although there is little "public-domain" software, there is software
available for little or no cost. You can get the FASTA package of programs,
which includes programs for library searches, sequence alignment, etc.
by anonymous ftp from uvaarpa.virginia.EDU, or you can write me for a VAX/VMS
tape. The software available via anonymous ftp works on any unix machine,
as well as VAX/VMS machines, IBM-PC's, and Macintoshes.

For other sequence analysis tasks, (finding restriction sites, doing
translations, etc), we use the DM package from David Mount, Dept. of Molecular
and Cell Biology, U. of Arizona, Tuscon, AZ. Although he normally distributes
a compiled version of his program for PC's, I believe that source code for
Unix machines is available.
