Biological Nitrogen Fixation Electronic Network
===============================================
Background: In 1988, when the directors of the 19 MIRCENs (UNEP/UNESCO
/ICRO Microbiological Resources Center) Network in Environmental,
Applied Microbiological and Biotechnological Research met in Hong
Kong, a joint MIRCENs 5-year Project Proposal was drafted. The proposal
involved all MIRCENs that conducted research in rhizobium. The communication
component of this proposal suggested the creation of BNFnet - a electronic
network of "BNF" people.

More recently, a joint project proposal was submitted to SAREC (Swedish
Agency for Research and Cooperation with Developing Countries) by MIRCEN
at Stockholm and BRDC (Biological Resources Development Corporation)
for a project which will use computer-based communication techniques
to help solve selected BNF problems in developing countries. A secondary
component of the application is to create a mailing list of BNF people
who can be reached via computer networks. The project, if approved
will start from July 1990 for 3 years.

Regardless of whether the application is approved or not, it is apparent
that there exists isolated groups of BNF people who have access
to electronic mail and conferencing systems. Information on such
people and their network addresses is lacking.

If you are interested to become a member of BNFnet, please send your
name, postal address and electronic address to -
