The RAILROAD list is NOT the same. People like the RAILROAD list because of less traffic, and a gateway to rec.railroad would drive everyone away. One plus point to RAILROAD is that we limit traffic, so people are encouraged not to post junk messages. Second, I would not want to become a part of certain problems, as the railroad split is sure to have. What I have written about those problems seems to fall on deaf ears, though out of the 30 or so private responses I have gotten on the subject, not more than 3 have been in favor. I have said why I think the rec.railroad split is bad, and I stand by that. Further, I did a survey on RAILROAD which does touch the question of misc. access. Although I was not specifically asking about this issue, I did ask people with newsgroup access about the availability of misc. groups. Of the first 100 answers to my survey, I am even more surprised to find out that FEWER people than I thought get misc. newsgroups! So, even though it sounds like it belongs with those groups, I really would not at all want to be a part of something that is actually a negative impact on service. I have been very careful to only make positive changes with my lists. bit.listserv.railroad would be a positive change for RAILROAD because those people who want to read it as a newsgroup can do so without the extra clutter of traffic from other sources (in the case of rec.railroad). As always, the option of directly receiving mail via the Listserv mode will stay. This is a win-win situation for RAILROAD. Lastly, perhaps in clarification, I would like the postings to be sent to RAILROAD from the newsgroup BEFORE they are sent to the group (RAILROAD should send them to the gateway/newsgroup), but failing that, a straight bi-directional gateway is the best. ** ------------------------------------------------------------------ ** ** Geert K.
