<B>Hello
<B>My company is running on ethernet (Thin net) using Lantastic.
<B>We have about 28 computers on this network all on one bus with
<B>no repeaters or hubs and use coax cable with BNC Tconnectors and
<B>we're also using the Lantastic AE-2 NIC cards(novell compatible).

<B>I have been here about a year and have begun to offer alternatives
<B>to Lantastic. Novell 3.11 is what I'm pushing because I've worked on it
<B>and know it very well.

<B>My problem is HARDWARE. I know Ethernet has a limit of 607 feet of cable
<B>(I've recently discovered we have 887 ft;thats one of the causes of our
<B>downtime) and a limit of 30 computers per segment.

<B>Question: How can we get more than 30 computers on the network?
<B> Can we use a HUB or a Repeater with the existing cables?
<B>Also, times are tuff so money is also a big factor right now, are there
<B>any suggestions for an improvement.

<B>Short Term and/or Long term advice would be greatly appreciated.

<B>Thank you,

<B>V.S.

If you use a Novell 3.11 file server and you can locate it in a
geographically central spot you can configure several networks. Instead
of just one ethernet card you would install 2 or more. Each NIC is a
seperate ethernet bus. So if the server is in the middle it would in
effect be at the far end of each of 2 segments. Maybe 25
workstations are on 1 segment and 40 are on the other. This makes the
server perform a routing function which does have some performacne
implications. Since most of the traffic is between the workstation and
the server there should be little routing requirement. The Novell
documentation explains this fairly well.

There are also some fairly cheap repeaters that would allow you extend
the effective length.

Good luck.
