An article was posted to the following newsgroups with the subject "soc.couples.intercultural - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)": news.groups,soc.couples,soc.culture.african.american, soc.culture.asian.american,alt.culture.us.asian-indian,soc.misc, bit.listserv.xcult-l The post generated lots of responses, all of which were routed back to the same newsgroups (and therefore xcult-l@psuvm.psu.edu). The listowner, after getting this flood of mail which did not directly concern his list, decided to request that the gateway be terminated and bit.listserv.xcult-l be rmgroup'ed. While the poster may have intended to include the b.l.xcult-l people by including them in the Newsgroups line, the net effect was the loss of the newsgroup. We should remind people that the bit.* groups are gateway'ed to mailing lists, and that a ton of mail may cause the list owner to close the newsgroup. Cross-post to the bit.* groups only if necessary, and remove bit.* groups when making follow-up posts whenever possible. --- Jim McIntosh (jim@american.edu) The American University Washington DC 20016-8019 USA
