Unseen messages are very frequently a problem in a different way
as well.  There are a large number of subscribers to the 
mailing list who do not unsubscribe when not reading the messages
for months at a time.  The unread messages from a high volume list
can fill up the disk storage on computers with many subscribers
to the list.   Reading the messages with a newsreader solves that
problem quite nicely.  Please do make this change.
