Im the listowner of christia@asuvm.inre.asu.edu and moderator of
bit.listserv.christia. I have my list and newsgroup set up in such a way
that this was not a problem, and spam didnt even make it onto the
newsgroup. You may consider something similar for your list/newsgroup.
1. I made the moderator submission address of the newsgroup the same as
the submission address of the list itself. This way, whenever someone
tried to post to the newsgroup, the post was sent directly to the list,
and not put onto the newsgroup and automatically distributed by the list.
This allows you to use the listserv to do all the moderating.
2. Instead of a private list, mine is set as:
* Send= Editor
* Default-options=editor
So anyone subscribed to the list can post freely, via both mail and the
newsgroup. Anyone not subscribed to the list has his posts sent to the
list moderators for approval. This pretty much removes spam from being
distributed. And net.kooks who occasionally make it to the newsgroup can
be filtered by the moderators.
3. A lot of my listmembers prefer to read the list via the newsgroup.
This allows them to do so, while still keeping the riffraff out. When
someone starts participating via the newsgroup, and I determine that they
are safe, I add them to the list, and set their subscription to nomail.
This allows them to post an article without the moderator having to
approve it first. This cuts down on moderator work load. Its a good
thing.
4. I usually have less than 10 posts a day to approve, on a traffic of
60-100 posts a day.

A lot of us listowners are having trouble contacting american.edu. It
seems they may no longer be supporting gateways for lists that are not on
their listserv. (Though they havent actually closed them down.)
You might get more info from the LISTSERV list owners' forum
