I think Anne Bradstreet is a very strong woman. Not many Puritan women
had the benefits she had. She obtained somewhat of an education by reading and
studying books. Her father did not hold her back in any way. This was very
unusual for a Puritan woman, so she never wanted any of her works published at
this time. Most of her poems dealt with family matters, just as many Puritan
ideas. I think her poem to her husband is very special for one reason.
Usually, in Puritan society, people did not marry because they loved one
another. Men usually married women that knew something about their trade so
they could help them and take over when it became necessary. Anne Bradstreet's
poem to her husband is all about love. Whether she loved him from the
beginning, or grew to love him I do not know, but I wished I did.
Jonathan Edwards is not a writer I care much for. I did not like
"Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God." I found this work to be very boring
and too much about Calvinistic religion. It just was not very interesting to
me.
Like Anne Bradstreet, I think Phillis Wheatley is a very strong, black
woman, who died at too young of an age. She was one of the fortunate black
people to receive a very good master. She wrote many very good poems, but
unlike Anne Bradstreet, her poems were about many different things.
Benjamin Franklin is a very famous author. I enjoyed reading his
"Autobiography." I feel Franklin writes honestly and does not care to share
his opinion, or tell of his wrongdoings. Actually, most of it was about his
regrets, but it is nice to know even someone like Benjamin Franklin made
mistakes. "The Autobiography" is very straight forward and he writes about
many different things. Franklin was a very intelligent man and was very active
in his community. The fact that he wrote this for his son is very thoughtful.
Even though he never got to know his son, he was going to leave him something
to remember him by.
I enjoyed reading some of the works, but some of them were boring.
Poems are probably my favorite, so I really enjoyed Anne Bradstreet and Phillis
Wheatley.
