American University currently gateways posts between 312 mailing
list/newsgroup pairs using Penn State's NETNEWS package for VM/CMS. Like
many VM shops we are moving functions off VM in peparation for the
eventual deinstallation of VM. We would like to move the gateways to a
unix platform this summer. We have surveyed a number of existing unix
mail/news gateways, and have not been happy with any of them. We are
considering writing a unix-based gateway to duplicate and replace
NETNEWS's function.

From time to time people have sent us comments on the way NETNEWS does its
gateway function. In the early days, when NETNEWS was still in active
development, we would forward these comments to NETNEWS's author, Linda
Littleton, as suggestions for improvement. These days, since NETNEWS is no
longer in active development, we have been sending a short note to the
person making the suggestion telling them of this fact. It occurs to us
that as we write a new gateway it would be a perfect time to incorporate
any changes people would like to make in the gateway's function.

I wonder if anyone would mind if we use NETNWS-L/bit.listserv.netnws-l to
discuss the gatewaying of posts between mailing lists and newsgroups? The
NETNEWS package is not in active development so the list is not used very
much these days. Some people have indicated they would like to particate
in these discussions but they do not read news or else they don't use
mailing lists. An existing newsgroup/mailing list pair would be ideal
since it would let people from both the usenet community and the listserv
community particpate. If there's strong objection I'll set up a new
mailing list, but if there are no strong objections a list like NETNWS-L
would be ideal. Please let me know if you don't want us using this
list/newsgroup.
