Jonathan DID ask why not gate to rec.railroad ...

You do mean "as their is about to be a vote and the possibility of an
entire hierarchy devoted to railroads is under consideration", don't you?
As the misc. idea is a bad one, IMHO, and I know *MANY* people who will be
voting against it, don't assume that it will pass. It represents a
significant LOSS in service to people. As I stated before, I don't want
to be a part of something that will negatively impact service to the
people on my list. Bit.Listserv.Railroad is leaps-and-bounds better for
my list. Being part of a poorly distributed misc. hierarchy is not my
idea of better service for my customers - all of them, not just the
privileged few.

: I think what you want is a bi-directional gateway involving a standard
: *moderated* newsgroup in which the "moderator" address is the mailing
: list. The mailing list can then be moderated or not, as you like, and
: you will retain full control, as though the pair were just a simple
: mailing list without a newsgroup attached.

   Yes, exactly. Thanks!
