Submitted for comment and approval:

1) BGRASS-L is a listserv operated at the University of Kentucky with 800+
subscribers, dedicated to discussion of bluegrass music and related topics
including (but not limited to) musicians, recordings, instruments,
history, concert schedules, suppliers, etc.

2) The list owner of BGRASS-L is Frank Godbey (uka016@ukcc.uky.edu). The
listserv address is bgrass-l@ukcc.uky.edu

3) At the request of Frank Godbey and with the approval of the system
administrator of the host machine (ukcc.uky.edu), I am seeking to
establish a *uni-directional* gateway site to allow net users with USENET
access the ability to read postings to BGRASS-L, but not respond. Only
users who are subscribed to the list through normal listserv procedures
will be able to post to the list or respond to posts.

4) The proposed USENET name of the gatewayed list is bit.listserv.bgrass-l

5) The gateway is being requested due to the large number of subscribers
who prefer only to read list traffic and who would prefer to access it
via newsgroup rather than have the traffic appear in their email boxes.

A similar survey of subscribers to BGRASS-L is being conducted
concurrently with this survey of bit.admin

Please direct your comments to me via email at:

jlupton@mail.sas.upenn.edu (John Lupton - University of Pennsylvania)

I will summarize the resonses and report them next Monday (12/19)

Thank you for your attention and consideration.

This response will be posted just once.

I do not think the uni-directional gateways are a good idea. They are
counter to the way Usenet operates, and the average Usenet reader will
not understand they cannot post -- or rather that they can post but only
a subset of the particpants (those who read on Usenet) will see their
post. You'll end up with three groups of participants: those who subscribe
to the list who will only see things posted to the list; those who read
the newsgroup (and therefore see everything) and who post to the list
(and therefore everyone can read their posts); and those who read and
post to the newsgroup (who can see everything but only post to a subset
of the people).

A better solution is to establish a moderated gateway, and specify the
list address as the moderator address. This will cause ALL posts (from
both subscribers and news people) to come to the list address. If you
then set the list to "Send= Private" posts from list subscribers will
be distributed and posts from all others will be returned with a note
(which you can customize in your MAILTPL file). This tell them why their
post was not distributed, and how to join the list (and set their
subscription to NOMAIL) if they want to join the discussions.
