A local user tried posting to bit.listserv.mdphd-l but received an error
notification from the LISTSERV at ubvm.cc.buffalo.edu indicating that only
posts from list subscribers are accepted.

Can the list be configured to allow posts from the bit.listserv.mdphd-l
gateway?

No, it was set up this way on purpose. In order to be able to post
your user has to subscribe to the list. (They can then set themselves
to NOMAIL if they want to continue reading the newsgroup.)

It was set up this way (as are a number of other bit.** groups) to
keep out the idle chatter and the "Green Card" posts.
