I have a large, well established mailing list named Llajta, which is a discussion list regarding the country Bolivia and all things Bolivian. We recently (yesterday) got a newsgroup, soc.culture.bolivia, passed. During the process of getting the newsgroup voted on I promised to provide a bi-directional gateway between the list and the group, as I believed I would have news running on my machine before the group was ready. Well, the group is here, and I am not even close to having news posting capability from my own machine (I am posting this from a dial-in account). By coincidence, today I was made aware of the news gating service which appears to be related to this newsgroup. Since I am new to this particular area I don't know a lot of the ground rules, but it sounds as if the gateway services described in the document bit/policy are exactly what I would like for my mailing list and the newsgroup. So, my questions: 1) Can a bidirectional gateway be established between the mailing list Llajta (llajta@io.dsd.litton.com) and the newsgroup soc.culture.bolivia *without* a group bit.listserv.llajta (I have no need for the latter)? 2) What else (besides posting this message and waiting a week, then sending a message to news-admin@american.edu) would I need to do to establish the gateway? Thanks for any and all help, even if it is to tell me that I have badly misunderstood something and need to get off this group ;-) John Reading readingj@cerf.net reading@io.dsd.litton.com

Sure, we gateway dozens of non-bit.** groups. > 2) What else (besides posting this message and waiting a week, then > sending a message to news-admin@american.edu) would I need to do to > establish the gateway? Since the newsgroup is new and since you promised the gateway when the group was proposed, there is really nothing else you need to do. I can set up the gateway whenever you want. I see no reason to wait a week -- that waiting period is designed to let people comment on the appropriateness of a new bit.** newsgroup. The gateway code in NetNews works well with most Mailing List Managers,
such as Listserv and ListProc. The two requirements for the mailing list
are:
(1) Every post must have a unique Message-ID. If one is present in the
incoming post, the MLM must pass it through unchanged. If none is
present, the MLM must generate one.
(2) All posts must appear to come from one consistent address (usually
OWNER-<listname> but can be any address). Some older MLMs rerouted
posts so that they appeared to come from the poster instead of the
list. (This was not desirable since bounce messages are returned to
the poster, who can't do anything about them, instead of the list
owner who can remove the subscription causing the bounces.) I am
taking here about the Return-Path address, or MAIL FROM: in SMTP.
As long as your MLM meets these two requirements there should be no
problem gateway'ing your list.
