If a LISTSERV list is SEND= Private (i.e., only subscribers can post to it), will postings and responses to the bit.listserv.xxx equivalent newsgroup be posted to the newsgroup? to the LISTSERV? if the poster is not subscribed? I.e., is there a configuration of LISTSERV and bit.listserv that doesn't permit the bit.listserv.xxx to be subscribed, but does recognize individual posters (who are subscribed) to post messages to LISTSERV via bit.listserv? Hope that made sense.... Peter

In article <345gc2$j92@agate.berkeley.edu>, mip-arch@garnet.berkeley.edu (Museum Informatics Project) says: >If a LISTSERV list is SEND= Private (i.e., only subscribers can post to it), >will postings and responses to the bit.listserv.xxx equivalent newsgroup >be posted to the newsgroup? to the LISTSERV? if the poster is not subscribed? If the newsgroup is unmoderated, posts will be accepted to the newsgroup regardless of who posts them -- but only those posts posted by people who are subscribed to the list will be accepted for distribution to the subscribers. This can lead to the wierd situation where someone on the mailing list posts a question and someone responds to the newsgroup -- but the person who asked the question never sees the answer because the person who responded is not subscribed to the list. What many people do is set up the newsgroup as moderated, with the list address as the moderator address. All posts to the newsgroup will be sent to the list address. The list owner can then decide to have the list be Send= Private or Send= Public (or switch between the two as needed). When the list is set to Send= Private posts from non-subscribers will be returned to the poster by the listserv with a message explaining why the post was not >I.e., is there a configuration of LISTSERV and bit.listserv that doesn't >permit the bit.listserv.xxx to be subscribed, but does recognize individual >posters (who are subscribed) to post messages to LISTSERV via bit.listserv? If you have the list set to Send=Private, then those who want to read the posts in news can set themselves to NOMAIL. They will be able to read and post in news, and since they are technically subscribers their posts will be distributed. Does this answer your question?
