I like to know what happens to the Listserv mailing list when
a one-way gateway from listserv to netnews is established. Will
the liistserv continue to exist as before? Will the list subscribers who
do not wish to read the postings via the Usenet newsgroups
be able to recieve them in their mail boxes? My understanding
is that one-way gateway from listserv to netnews is an extension
of the listserv mailing list service to Usenet. Am I right?

Any info on this will be appreciated.

Sonam

Read my response to the proposal to have SKEPTIC available in Usenet via
a uni-directional gateway.

Basically, the gateway code would place each post from the mailing list
in a newsgroup. No posts on the newsgroup would be returned to the
mailing list. The mailing list subscribers would, in effect, see only
half of the posts. They might pose a question and although someone (or
many people) on Usenet might reply they would never see the response(s).
People on Usenet might make brillant contributions to the discussions,
but the mailing list readers would never see them -- the posts would in
fact appear to be ignored by the mailing list subscribers who are
unaware of them. Usenet readers might object to a discussion or point,
but the mailing list subscribers (unaware they were causing offense)
would continue with their discussions.

In answer to your question, though, nothing would happen to the mailing
list subscribers except for the occasional piece of e-mail asking why
they had ignored a post made on the Usenet side they had no opportunity
to see.

A *much* better solution (IMHO) is a moderated newsgroup. The moderator
has the opportunity to read each contribution made from the Usenet side
and pass those which merit consideration along to the mailing list.
