In another thread on bit.admin, I proposed to gateway the INSOFT-L Internationalization of Software mailing list to network news. The documentation that I am following for this process implied that I could easily use a name in another hierarchy, but I have since discovered that it isn't so easy. Instead of bit.listserv.insoft-l I had wanted comp.software.international I chose this second name because the subscribers to INSOFT-L who responded to my proposal to gateway the mailing list to network news overwhelming preferred a more descriptive name than bit.listserv.insoft-l. I must agree with them that the newsgroup names in the bit.* hierarchy are the most undescriptive in network news. Therefore, at the suggestion of Jim McIntosh, I am proposing that the naming conventions in the bit.* hierarchy be made more "flexible" to match the descriptiveness of newgroup names in every other hierarchy of network news.
