ECOLOG-L gateway to sci.bio.ecology

I propose that the ECOLOG-L list (ECOLOG-L@UMDD.umd.edu) be gated into
Usenet as a new newsgroup named sci.bio.ecology, and that the gate be
established either at AUVM or UMDD, at the discretion of the LISTSERV
administrator.

Re the 4 points specified in the bit.admin gateway policy statement:

1. In November 1992 a copy of the gateway policy document was sent to the
list owner (David Inouye) and the listserv maintainer (Rich Hargan),
and informally proposed this gateway. Neither one objected.

2. The issue of a Usenet gateway was discussed extensively in ECOLOG-L
in November. There were no substantive criticisms raised about a
Usenet gateway (though there was much talk about what Usenet *is*).
It does not appear that a formal vote in ECOLOG-L is necessary.

3. ECOLOG-L has more than 600 subscribers, and its topic does not overlap
   significantly with any existing newsgroup.

4. Are there any objections to this proposal?

Yes, one major objection, you cannot create groups in the mainstream USENET
simply by fiat. You must observe the guidelines for the creation of a new
newsgroup. An attempt to create this would not be honored by the majority of
news administrators and you will receive a large amount of abusive mail for
doing it. If you want to propose this, I advise you to get access to the
USENET group news.announce.newusers and acquire copies of the articles that
describe the newsgroup creation process.

(AS an aside, I do hope that the gateway maintainers will not hoor this
request except to the bit.listserv hierarchy).
