Listserver mailing list 'thrace' is an open, unmoderated discussion list
on and for the ethnic minorities in Greece, particularly in Thrace
province.

This mailing list provides a forum for the minority members, students, and
interested parties to discuss issues and news relating to the minorities
in Greece and Balkans. This mailing list is hosted by
listserv@vm.ege.edu.tr. 'Thrace' list has been active for more than two
years now.

I would like to propose 'Thrace' mailing list to be gated to UseNet, this
will allow, subscribers, interested parties, etc. who may not have direct
access to the list, to follow the news and discussion. Please write for
further details and enquiries to the listowner

This is a reply to Mr. Tsolak's proposal for a Turkey based newsgroup
regarding Thrace.

First of all I am very skeptical as to the purpose of such a Turkish based
list to be
gated on UseNet. The reason is that there is already an existing mailing
list about the
Thrace region, which is based at the Demokritus University of the city of
Ksanthi,
Thrace, in Greece. The list is an open forum and it discusses lots of
issues.

The attempt by Mr Tsolak to gate his list to UseNet is essentially an
attempt to
aid Turkish Government Propaganda, whose sole aim is to cause tension in
the
area by having a list about a region which is another country's territory.
Unfortunately,
it is the only road that Turkey knows, and that is raising territorial
claims with the
expectation that something will always be gained.

I wonder, how a mailing list could exist in Turkey which is uncensored,
unmoderate
and government propaganda independent. I say this because in that country,
freedom
of speech, freedom of opinion and expression and security of a person does
not
exist.

I will be very disappointed if UseNet becomes part of Turkish propaganda
and part
of a group of people who want to create tension in the area by taking
advantage
of the Moslem population in Thrace.

Having said that, I oppose to Mr Tsolak's proposal. I think we have enough
tension
already. Let not UseNet become another mean for fueling aggression and
possibly
a war.
