I have read N. Tsolak's call for discussion concerning a USENET gateway
for the mailing list "Thrace" hosted in Turkey at listserv@vm.ege.edu.tr.

On this matter, I would like to inform you that at the Democritus
University of Thrace in Greece there is a mailing list with the same name
and with similar but more general aims. This is the mailing list Thrace
maintained by listproc@demokritos.cc.duth.gr. In fact,
thrace@demokritos.cc.duth.gr is an open unmoderated discussion forum, mainly
focused around topics related to the Greek region of Thrace (Thraki) among
all interested netters all over the world. Moreover, the Greek list
thrace@demokritos.cc.duth.gr is older than the other Turkish list having
started in July 1994.

Information and archives of the Thrace mailing lists together with other
Democritus University of Thrace mailing lists are available at the URLs:

	http://www.duth.gr/maillist-archives/thrace/
	http://www.duth.gr/maillist.html
	http://platon.ee.duth.gr/data/maillist-archives/

Being the listowner of thrace@demokritos.cc.duth.gr, I strongly object to
the perpespective of a USENET gateway for the list listserv@vm.ege.edu.tr.
The main reason of my opposition concerns the fact that N. Tsolak proposes
a USENET gateway for a discussion list about Thrace, which is a region of
Greece, with a feed originating from a mailing list hosted in Turkey.

Given the political tension between the two neighboring countries, Greece
and Turkey, I think the appearance in the USENET of such a list is not
going to contribute to the general objectives of the Internet mediated
communication. Instead of promoting a mutual understanding between netters
in these countries, a mailing list hosted in one of these and aiming towards
the other country will reproduce the lack of confidence among people in
these countries.

Because I believe that USENET should not play a polarizing role by
unilateral actions in international politics, I would like to suggest that
N. Tsolak's proposal is not accepted.
