Gateway for witchhunt under discussion

I would like to propose that the e-mailing list witchhunt@mit.edu be made
available via usenet as bit.listserv.witchhunt .
The list owner is Dr. Jonathan Harris (of MIT) who has expressed his
approval to making this list available on usenet. I will post an
announcement to the list and invite readers to post their comments here
(on bit.admin) or there (on witchhunt@mit.edu).

Below is an ad describing the list. We will need a short (45 character
maximum) description of the list for usenet. Suggestions are welcome.

rev: 8-15-94
This announces a discussion group/mailing list called "witchhunt". The
purpose of this mailing list is a free an open discussion of the question
"Have the efforts to prevent child sexual abuse created a witchhunt?"
Although the title of the mailing list indicates my personal view (bias)
on a portion of this issue, all viewpoints are welcome.

Issues related to this question include:
Mass abuse in nursery schools (eg. McMartin preschool, Little
             Rascals, Fells Acre cases).
How accurate are repressed memories? Or do they exist at all?
Are defendents in these cases treated fairly?
Are the allegations themselves true or false?
Is there a "reverse witchhunt" out to destroy legitimate efforts of
             child abuse prevention and treatment?
What is the scientific basis for verifying/falsifying and allegation?
What has happened in a given case. Most cases aren't well followed in
             the national press.
Thus contributions to the list can fill in the blanks from the
             local media sources.
What legislation is being considered or court rulings being handed down
             and what are the implications?

Instructions:
To post: mail your posting to witchhunt@mit.edu
*To subscribe: mail a message "subscribe witchhunt" to harris@mit.edu
	or witchhunt-request@mit.edu
PLEASE DO NOT mail subscribe/unsubscribe messages to witchhunt@mit.edu.
More complete information will be sent when you are added to the list.

Changes to the list take about 24 hours after I initiate them to become
           effective.

So far all the response on witchhunt has been positive about forming this
usenet newsgroup. A few questions have arisen.

The list is currently served by software other than LISTSERV. Dr. Harris
is looking into moving to a LISTSERV system. Is this necessary to form a
gateway?

Could it be possible to post FAQs to the newsgroup ONLY (ie, have the
FAQs appear on USENET but not go into subscribers mailboxes)?

The witchhunt list has gone to a LISTSERV (details below), so the
following question can be disregarded.

To: witchhunt@MIT.EDU (FORWARDED MESSAGE)
Subject: ACTION REQUIRED TO PRESERVE YOUR SUBSCRIPTION: CHANGE IN LISTSERVER
Date: Wed, 19 Apr 1995 14:06:32 EDT
From: "Jonathan G. Harris, Dept. of Chem Eng, MIT" <harris@MIT.EDU>
Content-Length: 1040

Next Monday (April 24) I will move witchhunt over to a real listserv system.
It is thus important for all users to take the follow action: Mail a message

"subscribe witchhnt" <your name>

to listserv@mitvma.mit.edu. You should make sure you receive the welcome file
to confirm that your subscription worked.

Note NO "U" in witchhunt because of 8 character name limit.

As of next Monday, people who have not resubscribed to the new server will
no longer receive witchhunt posts. I will try to set things up so that after
Monday posts sent to witchhunt@mit.edu will be forwarded to
witchhnt@mitvma.mit .edu.

Starting next Monday you should send witchhunt posts to
witchhnt@mitvma.mit.edu. DO NOT SEND SUBSCRIPTIONS TO THAT ADDRESS.

Also, before Monday, please continue to send your posts to witchhunt@mit.edu
so unmigrated users will receive them.
