Summer Teaching Opportunities

The Graduate School of Environmental Studies of Bard College is seeking
two instructors to teach courses described below. Courses will be taught
July 27-August 21, 1998.

Restoration Ecology: The course should introduce principles and practice
of ecological restoration. The instructor will design the course but we
anticipate the topics to include restoration goals (e.g., historical or
prehistoric conditions, mitigation, remediation, habitat enhancement), how
projects are designed and managed, costs of restoration, monitoring, and
evaluation of success. Ideally readings and lecture will cover
restoration of waters, soils, vegetation, and animal populations (local or
out-of-state examples). The relevance of restoration to understanding
ecosystem function should also be considered. At least one local field
trip should be incorporated.

Population and Conservation Biology: The course should cover population
structure and dynamics, and the application of population theory to
wildlife and fisheries management. The implications of population
processes for conservation biology and management of rare species should
also be included. At least one field exercise demonstrating population
survey techniques should be planned.

GSES is an interdisciplinary program in which students earn a Master of
Science in Environmental Studies degree. Classes are held on campus
during the summer in two four-week terms. In addition to a variety of
ecology courses, students also take social sciences and interdisciplinary
courses. Ecology classes usually meet for two hours a day, four days a
week. A typical student would take 3 courses per term; the program is
intensive. Students generally enter the program after several years of
working as professionals in their chosen fields and wish to improve their
professional training. They are highly motivated, willing to work and
come from a variety of academic backgrounds.

Ph.D. and relevant research experience is preferred; ABD is acceptable.

We supply housing (shared dorm facilities with other faculty members).

Interested individuals should submit a letter of application in which they
present a brief course outline, a curriculum vitae, names, phone numbers
or e-mail addresses of references to Ms. Heidi Simmons, Graduate Office,
Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY 12504. Contact the Graduate Office
for additional information (914-758-7481)
