NORTH CAROLINA WANTS MATHEMATICIANS
The department of Toxicology of the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill has immediate openings for postdoctoral trainees to develop mechanistic
mathematical models of toxicological responses, and to explore statistical
inference in the dynamic models that result from such modeling efforts. The
goal is to improve the ability to conduct risk assessments for environmental
exposures by using mechanistic models to help with low-dose and interspecies
extrapolation, and to broaden the data base available to make better
informed risk assessment decisions. Descriptions of two of the research
efforts follow the contact addresses, below.
The positions require a recent Ph. D. in biomathematics, biomedical
engineering, chemical engineering, biostatistics, toxicology, pharmacology,
or a related field, with experience in quantitative modeling of biological
systems. Familiarity with statistical methodology will be helpful.
Successful candidates will collaborate with scientists in the National
Health and Environmental Effects Laboratory, U. S. Environmental Protection
Agency, in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. This EPA research effort
provides for a postdoctoral training opportunity to interact with biological
investigators in the development of hypotheses about toxic effects and their
quantitative expression. Trainees must be citizens of the United States, its
territories or possessions, or lawfully admitted to the United States for
permanent residence. For further information on specifics of the research
activities contact: Dr. Woodrow Setzer, NHEERL MD- 55, U. S. Environmental
