OK, so this is just lab experience. The way they do it at the
University of South Carolina is, they break the large 100-student
lecture up. Students go to lecture for 3 hours a week (usually 2
90-minute or 3 60-minute classes), and then have a 3-hour long (once a
week) lab each week, worth 1 credit (vs. 3 credits for lecture). Each
week they do various things in lab, but the labs are only 20 students
per lab, so there are 5 taught every week (usually by grad students
rather than professors). So almost all of the exercises I know of work
in a small setting. How you'd do that with 100
students... hmm... that'd be really tough.
