The Akwesasne reservation lies in both provinces of Ontario and Quebec, and also in northern New York State. Their population is approximately 8,000 on over twenty eight thousand acres of land around the Saint Lawrence River. This area has been polluted extensively by various industries. As a result of the effect of cumulative pollution, the ecosystem in this area is a disaster, and unfit for human use in most parts. The people of the Akwesasne used the river for food, drinking water, recreation, and transportation. They view the pollution as a serious concern for the survival of their people. There have been few studies to show the severity of the ecosystem degradation. -Suresh sgj2@cornell.edu -----== Posted via Deja News, The Leader in Internet Discussion ==----- http://www.dejanews.com/ Now offering spam-free web-based newsreading
