The Trenton Computer Festival The Trenton Computer Festival (TCF) is the oldest personal computing show in the world. First held in May, 1976, TCF was held at Trenton State College for the first fourteen years before moving across town to Mercer County Community College in 1990. Trenton Computer Festival 1993 will be held on Saturday and Sunday, the 17th and 18th of April, 1993, at Mercer County Community College, West Windsor, New Jersey. This is about two miles east of U.S. 1, and about 5 miles north of Trenton, New Jersey. (Directions can be found below.) One of the areas that make the Trenton Computer Festival unique is a full speaker program which continues all weekend long and provides exposure for many kinds of computer related topics. Talks begin shortly after the festival opens each day and continue until shortly before the festival closes. The Trenton Computer Festival has a long history as a buyer's festival. Over the years festival attendees were known to save their money and come to Trenton with long lists of stuff they were looking for, ready to snap up any bargains that they spotted. Computer hardware and software sales takes place in two traditional areas: the Commercial Vendor area and the Flea Market. The Commercial Vendor area evolved with the personal computer industry. At first, the fledgling computer industry pioneers had booths inside. Early vendors were often little more than electronics junk dealers. They very quickly evolved to national hardware and software vendors. With the rise of the IBM PC and the computer dealer, national vendors quickly disappeared to trade shows like Comdex and dealers took their places. Currently, the Commercial Vendor area contains dozens of small computer dealers, typically hawking various PC clones, books, supplies, parts and software. Pricing is extremely competitive with razorthin margins. The Flea Market at TCF, on the other hand, is a unique event. Here parking spaces are sold at a fraction of the price of indoor booths. Many vendors buy space both inside and outside, shuffling product back and forth as the need appears. Since TCF is traditionally held just at the close of the rainy season, it typically rains for a (short) period of time during the festival. Many vendors put up tents and tarps to keep the rain out. Others just sell stuff out of vans and close the van doors during the rains. Additional information is available from the /pub/TCF/tcf directory of pilot.njin.net. Guaranteed parking is available at Mercer County Park, which surrounds the MCCC campus on three sides. MCP has two entrances, one on Rt 535 (Edinburg Rd. or Old Trenton Rd., depending on whether you're north or south of MCCC) and one on Hughes Drive. My advice is to turn off at a park entrance. HOWEVER, if you're early or if you're daring, continue past the park entrance to the College entrance. If you're lucky, the gendarmes will let you on campus to look for a parking space. IF THEY REFUSE YOU ACCESS, continue to the traffic light and turn (either LEFT onto Old Trenton Rd. or RIGHT onto Hughes Drive.) and proceed to the Park entrance. FROM THE NORTH: 1) VIA U.S. 1: Go south on US 1 and take the Rt 533 South (Quakerbridge Rd.) overpass. After about two miles, turn left onto Hughes Dr. The Park entrance will be on your left in about a mile. The main entrance to the college is reached by continuing on Hughes Drive to the intersection of Old Trenton Rd. Turn left and follow the signs around the jughandle turn into the campus. 2) VIA N.J. TURNPIKE: Go south to Exit 8 (Hightstown) and get on Rt 33 WEST. In downtown Hightstown, turn right onto Rt 571 and follow. Near GE Astro, turn left onto Rt 535. The Park entrance is about 4 miles down the road on the right, with the College entrance about a mile further. FROM THE SOUTH: 1) VIA U.S. 1: Go north on Rt. 1 and turn right onto Quakerbridge Rd (Rt 533 South). Then follow the instructions in (1) above. 2) VIA I-95: I-95 NORTH becomes I-295 SOUTH (don't ask!). Take Exit 65A, Sloan Rd and follow to the end (Sloan Rd. becomes Flock Rd. at the light - also don't ask!!). Go left onto Old Trenton Rd. The Campus entrance is by a jughandle turn, about a mile up Old Trenton Rd. The Park entrance is on the left about a mile further up. 3) VIA I-295: Follow I-295 NORTH to Exit 65A, and then follow the directions in (2) just above. 4) VIA N.J. TURNPIKE: Take Exit 7A to I-195 WEST. This becomes I-295 North. Take exit 65A and follow the directions in (2) just above.
